1. Comb When Wet, Brush When Dry

When the surface of your hair (aka, the cuticle) lays flat and isn’t tangled, your hair looks shiny and silky. To get this to happen, you’ll want to take steps to make sure your hair doesn’t tangle. When your hair is wet, you’ll want to comb it to limit the breakage and then once it is dry, switch to a flat paddle brush.

If your hair is tangled, work through the tangles slowly and in small areas, starting at the ends and moving up towards the roots. Working from the roots down makes it more difficult to detangle and also increases breakage,

2. Use a Shine System

The hair products you use have a big impact on how shiny your hair is. Your products can dull your hair, so pick a shampoo, conditioner, and other heat protectant products to make your hair shiny.

You can also use a leave-in shine treatment or hair spray with a glossy finish. If you dye your hair, pick a dye that provides multi-faceted colors. This will give your hair dimension over a flat, all-over solid color.

3. Use a Hair Mask

Using a hair mask occasionally (think once a week) can help nourish and hydrate your hair. Hair that’s dry often appears tangled and dull. After washing your hair, massage a hair mask into your hair until it is completely coated and then give it 5 or so minutes while you do the rest of your shower tasks. Rinse it out and enjoy highly hydrated, silky hair.

4. Turn Down the Water Temperature and Protect Your Hair

A steaming hot shower is tempting, but it does a lot of damage to your hair (and your skin, for that matter). Turn down the water temperature a bit, at least while you are washing and rinsing your hair. The extremely hot water can dry out your hair, increasing the frizz, so if you can stand it, make the water lukewarm.

Just as you protect your skin from the sun, protect your hair as well. Grab a wide-brimmed hat or baseball cap if you’re hitting the beach or use hair products with UV protection.

5. Sleep on Silk Pillowcases

Cotton pillowcases absorb moisture from your hair and can contribute to frizzy, tangled hair. Invest in silk pillowcases, which allow your hair to retain moisture and oils. Your hair will glide over the silk and detangling will be minimized.
