Like many businesses in South Carolina, hair salons were forced to close during the COVID-19 pandemic. But now that the state has started reopening in phases, you might wonder where hair salons fall in the lineup.

The short is yes, hair salons in Charleston, SC are open for business. As of May 18, Governor McMaster allowed barbershops, hair salons, and gyms to reopen to the public.

But we’re in different times now, and your typical hair salon visit might look a little different, too.

New Guidelines for South Carolina Hair Salons

Per the guidelines released by the State of South Carolina, hair salons are having to make several changes to accommodate their clients. These include, but are not limited to:

Social Distancing

Workspaces should be six feet apart and include barriers and sneeze guards wherever possible. This helps to protect guests and stylists that may come into close contact with each other in passing.

Administrative Controls

Prior to your appointment, stylists will be asking screening questions to ensure it’s safe for you to enter the facility. Salons are also holding their stylists to the same guidelines and encouraging them to stay home if experiencing COVIDd-related symptoms.

Additional Cleanings and Sanitization

Hair salons are required to maintain a disinfecting and cleaning schedule, usually in between each appointment. These cleanings don’t only involve the chair and workstation, but also the restroom, common areas, and anywhere else a guest may have visited.

Pre-Entry Requirements

Salons that used to accept walk-in appointments are no longer able to do so. Guests can contact the salon when they arrive if someone isn’t outside to conduct a pre-screening before entry. Salons have also been encouraged to space out appointments to minimize wait times and get clients in and out as efficiently as possible.
