5 Things You Should Consider When Choosing Foundation

Whether it’s for a wedding, party, or simply everyday wear, the foundation can make or break your look.

Keep reading to discover five things to consider when choosing foundation.

Activity Level

The first thing to consider is your activity level. If it’s the hot summer months, even if you just plan on lounging by the pool you’re probably going to be sweating.

Or, if it’s the winter but you’re going to be running about all day in and out of hot buildings you might be prone to a little drippage. In these cases, it’s a great bet to go with a powder foundation that will help give you some luminance while soaking up and dribbles.

Be sure to choose one with some sun protection too!

If you’re planning a trip to somewhere cold or you know you’re going to be spending a day outside in cool air, a liquid foundation is generally the best option. You’ll keep your face moisturized and since it’s cold you’re unlikely to get much sweat.

Skin Undertones

The next things to consider are your skin undertones. Don’t fight them unless you’re looking to color correct.

If you have warmer undertones with green and olive veins you should choose a foundation with warmer tones like yellow, as well. If your skin has cooler undertones with blue or purple veins, choose a cooler foundation with pink undertones to compliment your natural skin tones.

This can be tricky to determine but during our Charleston-based makeup workshops, we’ll help you figure it out!

Skin Texture

When choosing foundation, it’s crucial to consider the dryness of your skin. Those with dry skin will benefit from a liquid foundation and a setting spray as opposed to a powder foundation or a powder set.

If you do have typically oily skin, a powder foundation can help combat this and keep you looking matte all day long.

Foundation Finish

Next, consider the foundation finish. Matte is the most natural-looking and takes away any excessive shininess in the face. It’s great for those with oily skin or a particularly shiny t-zone.

If you have typically dry skin that seems to lack a bit of life, luminizing foundation can combat this and bring an added glow to your skin.

Coverage

Finally, one of the most important aspects is the coverage. If you have large pores or acne that you don’t want showing through, you’re going to need a fuller coverage than someone without these marks.

Bonus: Change With the Seasons

Your skin changes throughout the seasons. Dry to oily, warm to cool, don’t expect your skin look its best with the same foundation year-round. Be prepared to adapt as the seasons change. You’re going to be more than in summer than you are in winter, so it’s good to have a second foundation ready to go!
